Work Before Becoming MP
Before being elected to Parliament, Will was already leading efforts to combat the cost of living crisis as Deputy Leader of Woking Borough Council. His initiatives included:
Leading Local Responses
In November 2022, Will spearheaded the development of a 15-point action plan to support residents during the cost of living crisis. This plan was created in collaboration with local stakeholders, including Citizens Advice, Foodwise, The Lighthouse, Surrey Coalition of Disabled People, Surrey County Council, Welcome Church, and Woking Foodbank. It focused on connecting residents with essential services, providing warm hubs, ensuring food security, and offering direct financial assistance. 📖 Woking Council Leads Borough-Wide Response to Cost of Living Crisis
Advocating for National Support
In May 2022, Will backed the Liberal Democrats' £1,100 Cost of Living Rescue Package. This proposal called for a windfall tax on oil and gas companies to fund essential measures, including doubling the Warm Home Discount from £150 to £300 and introducing a £200 catch-up voucher scheme to help children recover from pandemic-related learning losses. It also sought to reverse the National Insurance hike, which had already cost families £1.4 billion. 📖 The Lib Dems’ £1,100 Cost of Living Rescue Package
Through these actions, both as MP and in his previous roles, Will has demonstrated his commitment to tackling the cost of living crisis and supporting Woking residents. However, there is still much work to be done.
